CALGARY - In response to the recent surge in gun violence in Calgary, City Council announced a new Public Safety Task Force in order to curb firearm violence in the city. The Prime Minister acknowledged this and several other spikes in gun crime including Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, by giving his 6 month assessment on the effectiveness of the ban on what he termed "military-style assault weapons" including paintball guns and the Black Rifle Coffee Company.
"The Order In Council is Working As Intended," The Prime Minister announced from his fortified Cottage, "the purpose of the ban was never to make people safer, it was to paint hunters with lawfully owned and registered rifles as ignorant rednecks and serial killers." Trudeau also addressed the need to curb actual gun violence in urban areas and demonstrated his knowledge of firearms, "You can't fool me, pistols and handguns can't kill people - they are too small and don't look anywhere near scary enough."
Besides Calgary, which with 66 shootings has seen a 120 per cent increase in firearm related crime compared to the same time period last year, Toronto also saw an increase of 208 shootings (+23) and 14 killed (+2) from when Trudeau announced the ban to Labour Day weekend. Montreal also saw an increase in gun violence, including an officer being shot last weekend.
Proposals to prevent further violence including no bail for offenses involving a firearm, increasing border security to prevent gun smuggling from the United States or introducing legislation to better target criminals using illegal guns in Canada where all dismissed by Prime Minster Trudeau citing "I don't want to punish criminals, I'm only trying to criminalize middle-aged white guys who don't vote for me."
