CALGARY - City Council is expected to announce the city's revitalized attempt to become Amazon's second headquarters or "HQ2" in the coming days according to an unnamed source close to the mayor's office.
In 2019, Calgary had initially applied for the coveted HQ2 to be located within the city by highlighting it's vicinity to the Rocky Mountains, economic incentives and cultural amenities. The previous bid caught the attention of the tech giant by using a guerrilla marketing campaign, one of which reading "Hey, Amazon. Not saying we'd fight a bear for you... But we totally would" and picturing a frontiersman.

The bid was initially won by Queens, New York - promising 50,000 jobs for an area that had one of the highest unemployment rates in the United States. The planned HQ2 was contentious and eventually canceled. Opponents were led by a local congresswoman stating that the jobs and economic boost for the area as well as expected revenues to the government in order to fund local social programs were unwanted because, as one opponent put it, "there may be successful people stopping by sometimes".
Although plans are seemingly underway for HQ2 to be located in Virginia, this has not deterred Calgary from relaunching their bid along with a new gorilla marketing effort, this time with the tagline: "Hey Amazon, not saying we'd fight a bear for you/But we would have stood up to AOC".
