CALGARY - In a show of support for the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, motorists in Calgary took the opportunity to flood Deerfoot trail, creating the traffic congestion that Calgarians have always felt is the epitome of "Normal".
"We were so happy to be back on the road" said one motorist - who was traveling slow enough that they could be interviewed through their car window, "the traffic volume, stalls on the side of the road, and even a couple of accidents made it feel like things were getting back to what we are used to." Other travelers took the opportunity to drive slowly in the far left lane, make questionable lane change decisions, and act as though the added turning lane sign was to be treated as a Yield.
Some drivers weren't thrilled by the return to normalcy, however, with one traveler stating "I've been able to get to work on time every day for 2 months. After everyone else gets back on the road, I'm spending hours in my car again." The commuter did get into the spirit of Deerfoot trail, eventually, texting and posting to social media about their frustrations while driving. This led to a celebratory accident and corresponding halt for his fellow motorists.
